History
Accutax opened for business in early 2018 as a project to put the founder’s knowledge of tax return preparation and skills as an attorney and accounting professional together.
There seemed to be a gap in serving middle-income taxpayers, who'd prefer not to slog through preparing their returns themselves, but didn't want to pay opaque or ever-increasing fees, especially to an unnamed preparer at an impersonal accounting firm. Knowing how to prepare tax returns quickly and accurately, there was a viable niche for personal, professional, fast, and affordable return preparation.
Accutax served 20 clients in 2018, nearly 70 clients in 2019, over 125 clients in 2020,170 clients in 2021, 215 clients in 2022, over 250 clients in 2023, and reached nearly 320 clients in 2024. We’re excited to expand even further in the 2025 season, and to learn ever more ways to serve our clients.

Richard Xavier Marea
Richard Xavier Marea was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1992, when the hit song "Rico Suave" by Gerardo came out, one of his best friends said, "Hey, you're Puerto Rican. I'm gonna call you Rico from now on." The nickname took a while to stick, but nowadays most of his friends and family call him Rico.
Rico started as a Georgetown University undergraduate in 2001 and has been a Washington DC resident ever since. In 2006 he took a job at Georgetown University. He was employed there full-time until early 2025, with his final role as Assistant Vice President in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, overseeing 32 employees in accounting, financial operations, information systems, and customer service. Rico left Georgetown University to run this business as a “full-time” operation in early 2025. He still misses his work and colleagues there, but is glad to have the full flexibility to spend lots of time with his two young sons, while they still like him.
Rico obtained both his law degree and master's degree in public policy from Georgetown University studying at night from 2008 through 2014. During that time and continuing through 2017, he also volunteered every year as a tax preparer, reviewer, and site coordinator as part of the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, certifying at the advanced level from 2010 forward.
Rico and his partner had a child in 2018. They both changed their names to match their newborn son’s last name. Marea means “tide” in Spanish. Rico’s last name used to be Headley-Soto. His name was updated with the DC courts in March of 2018, and at this point has been updated with pretty much every agency under the sun (including the DC and MA Bars.)
Rico also taught a Tax Policy class at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy in Fall 2018 and loves talking tax policy, if you’re up for it.
